World Masters Championships - Brazil 2007Nine members of the Irish Masters Team took part in the World Masters in Sao Paulo Brazil and what a performance they gave winning 6 medals , 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze plus a bronze in the womens team event. This was a fantastic achievement from a very dedicated squad from one of the smallest countries taking part. It was great to see so many ex Olympians and World medallists from other countries taking part. More than 200 Brazilians made it the largest entry of the 1200 plus competitors and there were huge numbers from the Eastern bloc countries Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerjaban Ukraine and of course the usual big contingent from Japan. It was interesting to see Jane Bridge a former World Champion and Olympic Medallist for Britain fighting on this occasion for her adopted country of France and singing the French National Anthem with gusto at her medal ceremony. The judo competition lasted four days and started at 9.30 every morning and was over at about 4 o'clock each day when the Medal ceremony would start. There were six mats going at once and the whole event was run very smoothly by the Brazilians with no mat lying idle . Chris Hickey was one of the many referees and he did an excellent job. Squads |
