As part of the Tyrone and Donegal celebrations of the 400th Anniversary of the Flight of the Earls almost 80 members of the Ren-Bu-Kan club took part in the Festival of Judo in Dungannon Leisure Centre at the weekend.
A large turnout of parents and families witnessed a spectacular display of skills. As well as the "free-fighting" exhibitions there were team and individual contests.
In the boys under 8 years Niall Corr was the winner over Conor Sheeran, Thomas Steenson, and Jamie Stretton. In the the Youth section Ciaran Little had wins over Peter Ward, James Kavanagh, Kevin Grimley and Ryan Burton.
The main event of the day was the men's senior event which featured five Black Belts . Three were from the Ren-Bu-Kan and the other two were visitors. Luke Corcoran from Dublin is the current Irish senior champion while Sebastian Torres from Brazil was the Brazilian under 21 year old Champion. They were up against Jonathan Herron , Daniel Grimley and Brian McGilloway.
In the first fight Brian McGilloway was armlocked by Luke Corcoran and suffered ligament damage and had to withdraw from the remainder of the tournament. Sebastian Torres gave a dazzling variation of skills to beat everyone while Jonathan Herron only lost to Sebastian.
All of the participants, from the adults right down to the boys and girls of five years have to be congratulated for their discipline and for making this event a huge success.
The Dungannon club has the largest membership of any judo club in Ireland with over a hundred licenced members.
