-20 Welsh Open 2008 IJA National Team - Record Results for National Squad

The Irish National Team returned from Cardiff yesterday with a record 5 Welsh Open titles. The total medal tally included 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals from the Irish team and a further Silver medal and 3 Bronze medals from National Squad players representing their respective clubs.

Lloyd Manning from Macroom was the first player on the day to reach a final in the Junior -66kg category. A very close contest ensued with Lloyd trailing by Shido until the final 30 seconds when a beautiful Ko-soto-gari attack scored Ippon and secured the first of 5 Golds for the day. Lisa Kearney (Junior -52kg) fulfilled her favourites tag with four comfortable wins by Ippon for Title number two and Ian Byrne of Coolmine won Gold in the Junior -60kg category with an impressive array of Moroto-gari and Sutemi-waza. Other Junior medals went to Ren-bu-kan pair Sarah Hawkes (+70kg) and Ciaran Little (-55kg). Sarah lost only one of her four contests to collect an impressive Silver medal whilst Ciaran Little added a Bronze to his collection of previous Welsh Open medals.

In the Cadet categories Louise Brown of St. Peters (-48kg) had to work hard in each of her contests but produced the desired Ippon in the final 30 seconds to win Gold. The last Gold medal of the day went to Gemma Reynolds who will be pleased to have finally won this event after 3 previous Bronze medals. Matthew Rooney and Roisin McQuinn won Silver medals in the -50kg and -70kg respectively. Matthew lost out to injury for most of 2007 but will still be somewhat disappointed with his performance in the final. Roisin meanwhile demonstrated a marked improvement throughout the day and will be keen to better this result next year as she is the only member of this Cadet team who is eligible again in 2009.
